I urge you to look up the word “apathy”
Enter into your vocabulary
the expression
“That could be me”

My father’s skin was whiter than my mother’s
Unlike her brother’s
my family does not speak Spanish
We speak Southern

Her eyes are dark brown and her smile is the universe
Betraying that grin of hers
gravity is bringing everything down
She stays high as the birds

I was sitting in the sun when I remembered I was her daughter
It was time to go but I sat there longer
un momento mas
I wondered if she’d ever been sun-burned
