POEM: Excerpts from “Wonder City” by Jamie Cooper
Early-model American and Foreign Automobiles intermittingly relayed transmissions from the Planet X, a former Earthlike planet 117 million light years away in the neighboring Andromeda Galaxy whose parent Sun for unknown reasons unexpectedly extinguished. Its inhabitants favored, almost exclusively, musical genres similar to our own Adult Alternative, LCD Rap, Psychedelic Rock, Derogatory Country/Western, and Nu Metal.

An ensemble group called the Noise Addicts reenacted ancient tribal rituals once thought to induce ecstatic psychedelic states via the agency of classified mediums of sound such as chordophones, aerophones, idiophones, and electrophones. At official gatherings they outfitted themselves in certified uniforms resembling those worn by 18th century military personnel. They considered it their duty to perform these primitive alchemical sacraments during the modern incarnations of multifarious Greco-Roman exhibitions. It should also be noted that the Noise Addicts, along with their counterparts the Chosen Few, furthermore belonged to a tangential, unnamed collective of heterogeneous personages bestowed at birth with supernatural gifts.

At various points along the historical timeframe, hybrid languages emerged from obscure etymological roots, at which point new and advanced lexicons, nomenclatures, fossilized words, and amalgamated idioms became prevalent among a range of predisposed cultures and demographic populations. The Insurgency itself had its own vernacular, which consisted of grammata derived from ancient Ephesian cults, Buddhist mantras, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Asian pictographic scripts, and other demotic texts. Manually Coded Languages were also employed in an effort to identify and distinguish between allied and rival members of otherwise identical sets.

There was a peak in genealogical research conducted during the early onset of Global Network Databases (GND), followed closely by the nationwide phenomenon of Underground Submission Wrestling. Efforts by individual researchers to trace family lineages as far back as fourth, fifth, and six generations produced problematic results, and frequently led to ill-advised pilgrim voyages to ancestral homelands, fueled primarily by a psychiatric condition known as Bourgeois Self-Reproach. The use of pedigree charts was first popularized by occidental polygamist groups who campaigned for the prohibition of caffeinated beverages.

Countywide, teen fatalities quadrupled during the years coinciding with the Arena Rock phenomenon. The drownings at Horseshoe Lake were linked to Iron Maiden, a rural agricultural commune known for the practice of speaking in tongues, ceremonial circumcisions, prepubescent beauty pageants, and unlicensed underwater births. They had also been implicated in a string of disappearances in the wooded area surrounding Martha’s Bridge, which was the site of numerous local legends. Flocks of missing children were allegedly enslaved in camouflaged fallout shelters throughout the compound, but unofficial investigations revealed only circumstantial evidence, and search warrants consequently could not be obtained.

While local P.I.M.Ps (People Involved in the Marketing of Prostitutes) helped to revolutionize the sex trade, necromantic lyricists and hypnotic percussion ensembles produced underground recordings used to cast spells on underage Christian females between the ages of 14 to 20. Early pioneers composed satanic verses utilizing rudimentary rhyme schemes such as Fire & Ice, the Spenserian sonnet form, triplets, rondelets, villanelles, sestinas, terza rima, and rhyming couplets. Reactionary political groups called for continental boycotts, censorship, deportation, and, in some cases, prosecution, citing statistical spikes in clinical personality disorders, distorted self images, and failed fashion experiments.

In the intervening years the city council passed legislation criminalizing Licentious Group Activities (sex between three or more partners). The age of consent was raised to 21 for females (17 for males), and both men and women over the age of 55 were forbidden from engaging in sexual activity under penalty of law. Furthermore, sex acts of any kind were prohibited in all areas of the home except for authorized reproduction chambers. Legally-married heterosexual couples were required to observe elaborate tantric purification rites and were permitted to achieve orgasm strictly for the purposes of procreation. A number of local lawmakers were suspected members of the Illuminati, which was known to adhere to similar tantric practices.

One of the most significant shifts in Post-Transformation thought occurred at the intersection of Art & Science. The Metamorphosis cleared the way for radical new cosmological methodologies (or what some characterized as a return to Babylonian Cosmology), which spurred dialectical conflicts among artists, theologians, scientists, and philosophers. Avant-garde astronomers and astrophysicists teamed together with experimental authors, actors, and visual artists to observe phenomena originating from a quasar in the neighboring Sagittarius constellation. The purpose of these manned missions was to test the hypothesis that the brain’s proximity to perpetual bursts of cosmic energy emanating from galactic nuclei would elicit innovate techniques for aesthetic expression.

Only after the global collapse of gold-based economies did individual investors realize that the market did not exist. Industry-wide epistemological shifts raised questions about the investor’s ability to differentiate between economic realities and perceptions. Financial institutions adapted new mathematical languages. There was a return to the theory of absolute zero, the use of alphabetical letters to symbolize unknowns, a renewed focus on the natural numbers and the powers of 10, and a return to the systematic study of numbers as abstract entities.
Linguists, grammarians, lexicographers, and philologists performed language excavations which produced volumes of retro-futuristic verbal compilations and montages.

The Sister City phenomenon led to expanded theories of urban development. Model, symbolic, or otherwise replicated cities rose subconsciously through a process of seed transportation from idyllic neo-metropolitan areas, though it was eventually discovered that a number of these so-called cities were nothing more than an elaborate hoax perpetrated by experimental theatre companies. The germ of the glorified city was sometimes so potent that its companion or reciprocal city would sabotage itself through violence and corruption in order to be reborn. The descendents of Nimrod were considered the pioneers of modern-day urban developments, as evidenced by a brief but significant resurgence of Assyrian architecture and a tendency to erect capital buildings on the elevated planes of urban city centers. It should be noted that the Sister City phenomenon was categorically distinct from a somewhat similar Twin City anomaly in which pairs of fraternal cities were separated by a river at birth.
