Baum Gallery at UCA set to host two exhibitions in the Fall
The University of Central Arkansas’s Baum Gallery will host two exhibitions this fall, Peter Pincus: Color and Form plus Artistic Processes: Drawings and More, running Aug. 30-Oct. 11.
The Pincus show features the ceramics of this New York state artist. Born in Rochester, Peter Pincus is a ceramic artist and instructor. He joined the School for American Crafts as visiting assistant professor in ceramics in fall 2014. Pincus received his BFA (2005) and MFA (2011) in ceramics from Alfred University. Since graduate school, he worked as the studio manager and resident artist coordinator of the Genesee Center for Arts and Education in Rochester, adjunct professor of three-dimensional studies at Roberts Wesleyan College and has established a studio in Penfield, New York.
“What started as my curiosity for pottery and vessel has extended to include painting and sculpture, and my present work is evidence of that evolution,” he has stated as the goal of his recent work. “I believe that color interaction can elicit new ways of seeing, so I have dedicated the last five years to its study. Frequently, I elect to stage conflict by introducing an assertive color field to an equally emphatic form. This friction augments and enriches perceptions of space.”
Pincus will have a two-day workshop Sept. 19-20 in the Ceramics Studio in Schichtl Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The event is free and open to the public.
Other events and programs corresponding to Color and Form and Artistic Processes are as follows:
- Opening Reception: Aug. 30 from 4-7 p.m. at Baum Gallery, McCastlain Hall
- Lecture: Sept. 6 at 1:40 p.m. Brian Young, “The Spark of Creation: Drawings and Process”, McCastlain Hall, Lecture Hall #143
- Roundtable: Sept. 19, 5:30 pm, Laurie Pincus, Liz Smith and Peter Pincus. Brian Young will moderate, McCastlain Hall, Lecture Hall #143
- Lecture: Sept. 20, 1:40 p.m., Peter Pincus on his process, McCastlain Hall, Lecture Hall #143
All events are free and open to the public.
Brian Young, director of the Baum Gallery, said Pincus’ work would be popular with various constituencies.
“Our visitors have the opportunity to observe his complex forms that seem to defy the limitations of ceramics,” Young said. “As such, Pincus’ work will be especially inspiring to those enrolled in ceramic classes, as well as our art students and the general public.”
As a complement to Color and Form, the Baum Gallery will host the large exhibition Artistic Processes: Drawings and More. This features preparatory work across numerous media including printing, sculpture, painting, illustration, a poster, a banner and ceramics. The exhibition includespreparatory drawings, spontaneous sketches, sculptural models and even Pincus’ ceramic molds. Artists include Abe Blashko, David Bailin, Morton Brown, Charles Burchfield, Kevin Cole, Louis Freund, Tony Hepburn, Fannie Hillsmith, E.B. Lewis, Bryan Massey, Jennifer Rospert, Louis Schanker and Ben Shahn. Bailin, Massey and Rospert are faculty members of the UCA Department of Art; Brown is an alumnus of the department now living in Pennsylvania.
This exhibition is meant to show the spontaneous approaches or early stages that artists take in planning for a finished work of art. The variety of work is extensive. The pieces range from the doodles of famed American Regionalist Burchfield to Massey’s maquette (or model) for his large-scale bear sculpture that is affixed to the outer wall of Donaghey Hall. For those visitors interested in the evolution of the placement of murals in downtown Conway, there is a working drawing lent by Brown that was the basis for his Aurora Rising mural on the south side of Conway City Hall on Front Street, facing Simon Park.
For this exhibition, the Baum Gallery has received support from the UCA College of Fine Arts and Communication as well as from the Conway Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Baum is grateful for loans from the artists, Hearne Fine Arts, Little Rock, and Susan Teller Gallery, New York, New York.
