For those of you who know phantogram, simply telling you they performed Saturday night at George’s would be enough for you to know you missed a great show.
The upbeat electronic alternative-rock duo’s performance kicked ass! Lead vocalist and keyboardist, Sarah Barthel didn’t miss a single note while rocking out around the stage like it was nobodies business. Being at the show was like being in a smoky, wonderland. The red strobes lit up the heavy smoke, giving a thick crimson aura around the animated dancing of Barthel and guitarist/vocalist Josh Carter. Virtually only the outlines of the two were visible, attributing even further to the mystery of this wonderland, which was haunted by the echoed airy vocals of Barthel.
During the performance of their song “Bill Murray”, Barthel put on a black cloak covered in small diamond shaped mirrors that reflected golden light in all different directions as she slowly moved and softly sang about the pains of being alone. The duo finished with “Celebrating Nothing”. A self-explanatory title; the song is about partying for no reason other than the pure joy of it, an anthem to the life of a college student.
Although Phantogram doesn’t have any bad songs, only the best of their old and the best of their new songs were performed, which still filled up a whole 90 minutes with little to no break in between. The energy in George’s didn’t die for a second while Barthel and Carter had the stage. If you’re looking for a good show to dance to, but electronic dance music just isn’t quite your thing, Phantogram is the show for you!
