LaLaLand‘s One Night Standard on Thursday, December 10th will feature a collaborative installation by Jeanne Vockroth and Samantha Hussey. Both artists are from Louisiana and will be moving to New Orleans soon to pursue art careers in the Big Easy. The show is a farewell to Fayetteville and the relationships that were forged here for both artists.
For Vockroth the move stirs competing emotions. “I’m very excited about it long term,…it is bittersweet as well regarding leaving relationships, friendships and the continuing evolvement of those relationships.”
Vockroth was 15 when she moved to Northwest Arkansas from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit the city in 2005. The storm’s aftermath has had an indelible impact on the art that she produced during her student years at Fayetteville High School and later as an art student and BFA graduate of the University of Arkansas. During the past decade Vockroth’s work has expressed themes of identity and displacement in watermarked installations that combine the mediums of sculpture, collage, drawing and painting with video montage. “I felt I had to make art as a way of dealing with the grief and displacement due to (hurricane) Katrina…making art about my feelings was one way of working through that.”

Samantha Hussey has used the permeation of light and color in her art installations. Past works have involved references to the deep sea in photographs, videos and paintings. Hussey has also worked in fashion design. She is a BFA candidate in the College of Art at the University of Arkansas.
Thursday night’s ONS at LaLaLand will document the life and the friendships both artists have made in Fayetteville as well as the prospect of starting anew in NOLA. Vockroth will show five large scale pieces on hand-dyed fabric embellished with photos while on the opposite wall Hussey’s small scale work in synthetic materials will be accompanied by audio recordings. The back wall of the installation will combine the work of the two artists in a sort of celebration of friendships that have evolved here over the years. The LaLaLand show opens at 7:00 p.m. and runs through 9:00 p.m. One Night Only at 643 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
