WORDS / JORDAN ASH

Of course I wanna celebrate Wiener Day! The greatest holiday in the fictional town of Dumpster, AR, besides Christmas! My wife and I went to see “Weiner Day at the Rollercade” last Friday at The Joint, located at 301 Main St. #102 in North Little Rock, and at first, I thought it started at 8:30, but we arrived at 8:00 to kill some time and beat the crowd until we realized we were right on time for the show. Go us.

We went into the theater as the opening started and I didn’t know what to think as I saw three people – Steve Ferrell on guitar and lead vocals; Brett Ihler on bass and back up vocals; and Vicki Ferrell playing the drums.

Now, I say I didn’t know what to think at first because I JUST walked into the opening of the show and was worried that I was about to watch something reminiscent of Presley’s Jubilee, or the Bald Knobber’s, or some other crappy Branson show that my grandparents would enjoy. But thank the gods of the 12 colonies that it was anything but. (Battlestar Gallactica reference)

photo (43)It’s a scripted show and there were five live songs played. The two act play blended original music, and physical comedy. The three on the stage WERE the show. I never had the chance to catch a show like that before, and I loved it.  All three played many different characters. Each actor plays one of 18 characters and provides live music. It was a lot of fun. It is called Wiener Day after all.

I personally will be going to The Joint more often as long as shows like this are playing. Each character is hilariously performed by the three as they tell the story of the Fertle Family getting ready for the yearly Wiener Day carnival at the roller rink. The main character, Lou Fertle, is excited because his arch nemesis, Braxton Hicks, won’t be at the Rollercade this year because he’s in prison. Meanwhile, Country Wayne Conaway might be the father of Lou’s wife’s daughter, and there’s even a Cajun doctor who every time he speaks causes nothing but pains in my stomach from laughter.

The show will be playing every Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m., not 8:30, until July 20th. Tickets are $20.00.
