Crystal Bridges revealed plans for the creation of a new outdoor experience called the Ozark Discovery Canopy during a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 9. The playscape will be built along portions of the North Forest Trail, and will be an accessible, nature-based attraction for visitors of all ages.

“This playscape is more than a playground,” said Rod Bigelow, executive director at Crystal Bridges. “Its an experience designed to spark wonder and deepen our connection to the world around us.”

The Ozark Discovery Canopy is designed by architect Bryan Hanes, who was inspired by the ecology and geology of the Ozark Mountains. The playscape’s design is deeply inspired by water, flowing naturally, mirroring the forces that created the environment itself and leading visitors on a journey that will provide opportunities for experiencing art, science, and nature together.

Hanes said he wants the attraction to challenge visitors to explore creatively.

“There is a path that leads all the way through the experience from top to bottom and back up that is ADA accessible,” Hanes said. “At the same time, we are building in opportunities that are less evident, like a scramble up the side of a hill through a series of logs. We are looking for opportunities for creative play, but also for risky play. It is less scripted, it is less soft…it’s not a playground.”

Funding for the Ozark Discovery Canopy is provided by the Kroenke Family Foundation with support from the Alice L. Walton Foundation, the McMillon Family, and the Walton Family Foundation.

“This is going to be such an integral part of the overall campus and the experience when you come down here. It is where people of all walks of life, all ages, are going to come and feel welcome,” said Whitney Kroenke, representative of the Kroenke Family Foundation. “This is place where your going to have some fun. You’re also going to learn something.”

Ozark Discovery Canopy was designed with help from the Scott Family Amazeum, acknowledged experts in the field of imaginative play, who provided valuable insight on the project, according to Emma Claybrook, Public Relations Manager with Crystal Bridges.

The Ozark Discovery Canopy will be a free and open to everyone, a point that was emphasized by Marissa Reyes, chief learning and engagement officer at Crystal Bridges.

“We want everyone who comes here to feel like this is their place, where they are not just welcome, but also seen and celebrated,” said Reyes. “Every kid, no matter their background or ability, can discover new adventures and feel free to be themselves.”

Crystal Bridges celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony during a time of growth and development for the museum, with expansions including 114,000 square feet of galleries, studios, dining options, events spaces, and more.

Ozark Discovery Canopy is slated to open in 2026. Visitors can observe progress from a temporary viewing platform erected near the campus parking plaza.
