The Idle Class is hiring interns for Spring 2026. We’re looking for emerging journalists and social media creatives who want real experience telling arts and culture stories and shaping the voice of an independent magazine.

Who We Are:

The Idle Class is an independent arts and culture magazine focused on the people and projects shaping creative life in Arkansas. We profile established artists and cultural leaders while offering behind-the-scenes access to the work that defines the region’s arts community.

Journalism Internship Description:

Journalism interns work closely with the editorial team to report and write arts and culture stories featuring artists, organizations, and cultural events across Arkansas. Interns are expected to approach assignments with professionalism, curiosity, and strong attention to detail. Responsibilities include:

  • Writing short- and medium-length arts and culture articles for print and online
  • Conducting professional, thoughtful interviews
  • Meeting strict deadlines and adhering to assigned word counts
  • Fact-checking and revising drafts based on editorial feedback
  • Researching subjects and preparing interview questions
  • Assisting with coverage of events, exhibitions, and performances when available
  • Distribution of magazine in locations near the intern

Qualifications & Expectations:

Strong applicants will demonstrate the ability to work independently while maintaining professional editorial standards. Applicants should:

  • Write clearly, accurately, and with strong attention to structure and voice
  • Adhere strictly to deadlines and assigned word counts
  • Conduct interviews in a professional, prepared, and ethical manner
  • Follow basic journalistic standards, including accuracy, attribution, and verification
  • Be familiar with AP style (or willing to learn and apply it consistently)
  • Communicate reliably and respond to editorial feedback in a timely manner
  • Be comfortable reaching out to sources via email or phone
  • Preferred: Previous journalism, blogging, or publication experience; coursework in journalism, communications, or English
