Al Hooks to be featured artist at Pressroom in Bentonville for July
Photographer Al Hooks will be the featured artist at Pressroom Coffee, located at 121 W. Central Avenue in Bentonville, AR during the month of July 2013. The Norberta Philbrook Gallery and Pressroom Coffee will host a public reception for Mr. Hooks on Tuesday July 16th from 6-8pm.
Al Hooks’ month long solo exhibition opens as an accompaniment to the Bentonville American Art & Music Festival, a two-day event celebrating the American Spirit through visual art, blues and Americana music, sponsored in part by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
Al Hooks was raised in the French Quarter and studied photography in New Orleans and New York City. His listing of gallery exhibitions and shows is extensive. Hooks, a popular and recognized personality along the Gulf Coast, was enthusiastically involved in community events and associations in his home Pass Christian, MS.
In 2005 the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed directly over Hooks’ home and studio. The Mabey Gallery, hosting an exhibition for Hooks when the storm arrived, recovered six pieces of his work. Everything else was lost.
Like several of his friends and neighbors Hooks relocated to Eureka Springs, AR. Hooks considers himself blessed for the opportunity to have the fabulous Gulf Coast, New Orleans, and now Eureka Springs as his play grounds.
Hooks captures beautifully composed photographs. His trademark style involves a conceptual approach to manipulating the mood and movement of the subject matter, generating poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of recognition and the imagined. His works directly respond to the surrounding environment and use everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context.
