A new exhibit at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art departs from Old West stereotypes to emphasize the contributions of Native American artists and women. “Knowing the West” includes more than 120 pieces by both Native American and non-Native American artists in media such as paintings, sculptures, photographs and textiles.

Mainstays of wild west shows such as guns, melee weapons and depictions of violent battles are less prominent (though two significant Frederic Remington bronzes are included).

Instead, the exhibit features items central to daily life such as pottery, blankets, baby carriers, saddles, and even luggage. While engaging, and beautiful in an understated way, the show is a reminder of the austere, nomadic lives of the plains tribes.

“Knowing the West” will be at Crystal Bridges until January 27, 2025. Admission is $12, which includes access to the rest of the museum.
