WORDS / SANDRA HAMILTON

The Showroom in Little Rock houses a treasure trove of works available by abstract expressionist icon, Gino Hollander.  The Cantrell Road gallery houses the largest collection of except that of Hollander and his family.  Those not familiar with Hollander will find his work full of raw emotion with a compelling, underlying angst.  His subject is primarily female faces, purported to be those of his daughters, but he is known as well for his abstractions of southwestern mountains and pueblos.

Hollander, who was born in New Jersey in 1924, began his art career in Greenwich Village at the age of thirty-seven after a successful career in film.  He immediately sold all works in his first show.  Shortly thereafter, he moved his family to Spain, where he lived until 1990.  During this time, Hollander’s work was displayed in numerous one-man shows in Europe, as well as being featured in Galleries throughout Europe and North America.

Hollander possesses an adventurous spirit and counted among his friends, Jackson Pollock, James Michener, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.  The list of celebrities and institutions who own his work is extensive.

In his later years, Hollander lived in Aspen, Colorado. Today, although he suffers from health problems, he continues to paint and lives in California.
