In the winter of 2005, New Design School (NDS) launched its mission in South Fayetteville on the corner of then 6th St. (today MLK JR. Blvd) and Government. NDS offers the first and only certificate program in graphic design in the state of Arkansas. For ten years, students have traveled as far as Oklahoma, Missouri and Central Arkansas to learn the basics of visual communication for graphic and web design. This all began with a vision from founder Sonia Davis Gutierrez who was teaching in 2001 in New York City in a similar certificate-granting education program for adult students wanting to transition to new careers.

Inspired by this teaching experience, NDS founder Sonia Davis Gutierrez states, “I wanted to bring this [Parsons School of Design] caliber of design education to Northwest Arkansas.  Fayetteville already offered a great student culture. I had a vision to offer a myriad of design studies with a healthy dose of business and creativity development to the many talented individuals of Arkansas who might not be able to leave their home to study outside of the state or country.” Davis Gutierrez has done both having studied design in New York City at Parsons School of Design and in Europe at the Universidad of Salmanca in Spain.

Over the last ten years, New Design School has taught artists, self-employed individuals, city employees, corporate groups, government departments, children and young adults the basics of visual communication through workshops and academic seminars.
